The tool that is best for your dog is the one that works for your dog, the tool that your dog sees in a positive light and the one that does not make them want to run away or hide from.
Below is a case featuring a French Bulldog who is reactive towards dogs. His owner is very anxious after her dog has been attacked by a couple of dogs including a previous trainers dog. To make matters worse for the dog, the dog lacks direction when outside and does whatever she wants.
The tool of choice for this dog was a harness. People are programmed to believe that Harnesses are the best tool to walk a dog on, that they’re comfortable and kind to your dog. Reality is, a lot of dogs are not a huge fan, it’s also why a lot of dogs don’t like wearing coats or anything that goes over their body. Now you can condition a dog to a harness, but unless you’re involved in sports, where you want your dog to pull, a harness is not really the best tool for walking.
Now before people throw their toys out the pram and go ‘ a Frenchie must be walked on a harness’ that’s rubbish. Yes ! You do need to be cautious when walking on any device that goes round their neck but that does not mean that they can not be walked on a slip lead, or slip collar.
We opted to use the slip lead for this dog, it was the best choice for this individual, the best tool to communicate with on the walk and the tool the dog would be most relaxed with.
You see this dog needs guidance more then anything else, clear communication, especially when outside, the dog is crying out for some leadership. That’s why In less then 2 minutes with a little gentle pressure and guiding the dog where I wanted it to be, the dog just followed, no hesitation, no protesting.
So the best tool for your dog, is the one that works for your dog. If the dog hates the tool, find one that your dog does not. There are so many different tools to aid in dog training, choose the one that works best for the dog, not what works for your appearance.
